Terminology
- 1.1.5 - Sexed animals - Males, Females, Unsexed - eg. 1 Male, 1 Female, 5 Unsexed
- AFT - African Fat Tail gecko
- Amelanistic - lacking melanin or black pigment
- Arboreal - lives in trees
- Automy - can shed its tail
- Basking - lay in a spot to absorb heat
- Bell - bloodline of albino leopard geckos founded by Bell
- Brumation - cooling a reptile by lowering its temperature and photoperiod for 2-4 months to duplicate conditions of winter.
- Carnivorous - only eats animals/meat
- Caudal - Tail
- CB - Captive Bred - followed by year
- CF - Captive Farmed - followed by year
- CH - Captive Hatched - followed by year, Hatchlings from a Gravid Wild Collected Female.
- CITES - Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of wild flora and fauna. Designed to control the international trade in protected species of plants and animals.
- Cloaca - the body opeing that is used for excreting and mating
- Crepuscalar - active in hte morning and afternoon
- Diurnal - active during the day
- Dorsal - back
- Ectothermic - cold blooded, relies on surrounding temperatures to maintain its own temp. (see Thermoregulation)
Feces - an animals excreted waste material
Femoral pores - Enlarged pores found on the inside of the thighs of male and female geckos that excrete/produce a waxy substance
Genes - the closely related species
Gestation - The period of time between mating and the birth of young
Gravid - term to describe a when a female has eggs inside her
Hatchling - newly born gecko
Hemipenis - male gecko sexual organ
Herbivorous - only eats plants
Het/Heterogeneous - Carries a recessive gene
Hide - An enclosure furnishing providing a secure place for the animal to hide. Also acts as a lay box and a moist shed box.
Husbandry - The techniques used to care for an animal
Impaction - medical term used when a gecko's gastro tract is blocked and cannot allow the passage of
material
Incubation - term used to describe the controlling of environment conditions or eggs to hatch them
Insectivorous - only eats insects
Juvenile - a gecko that is past newborn but is in the early stages of life.
Lateral - sides of the body
Leo - short for leopard gecko
LTC - Long Term Captive - in captivity for approx. 3 months+
MBD - Metabolic Bone Disease
Melanistic - having an excess of melanin or black pigment
Neonate - A newly hatched or newborn animal
Morph - a color pattern; ex. albino, super hypo, harley, flame
Nocturnal - Active at night
Omnivorous - Eat both plants and animals/meat
Oviparous - Egg laying animal
Pathogen - Any disease-causing organism (parasite, bacteria ...)
Photoperiod - length of day, day light length
Prolapse - The external occurance of a gecko's internal organ. Usually associated with the inability of a male gecko to retract its
hemipenis
Rainwater - Bloodline of albino leopard geckos founded by Tim Rainwater
Sexual Dimorphism - dolor difference in sexs of the same species
Snout-Vent Length - A standard measurement of body length. The measurement is from the tip of the nose (snout) to the anus (vent), and excludes the tail.
Species - divides a genes of animals into specific groups of animals
Substrate - the covering of the bottom of the animal's enclosure; ex. paper towel, sand, bare bottom
Terrestrial - living on the ground
Thermoregulation - the act of controlling body temperature by moving to different temperature zones in an enclosure/environment (see Ectothermic)
Urates - The non-fecal part of the gecko's excreta. The white part of the urates may be semi-soft pellets which harden after deposition into a chalk-like substance
Vent - The external opening of the gecko's anus
Viviparous - Reproducing by giving birth to live young
Vivarium - Animal enclosure created to mimic nature; includes live plants
